In a distressing act of vandalism, a statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, a revered figure in Sikh history, was defaced in Brampton, Canada. The incident, allegedly led by Palestinian protester Hosaam Hamdan, has sparked widespread outrage among the Sikh community, with leaders calling for swift legal action against those involved.
Harmeet Singh Kalka, President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), condemned the act, stating, “Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji represents Sikh pride, valor, and unity. This disgraceful act is an attack on peaceful coexistence and the values of diversity.” Kalka urged Canadian authorities to take immediate action to prevent further incidents of this nature.
Similarly, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, BJP National Secretary, decried the act on social media, calling it “disgraceful” and pushing for “swift and stern” consequences for the perpetrators.
Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, clarified that the incident did not occur within city limits but joined in condemning the vandalism. “Maharaja Ranjit Singh is a symbol of bravery and leadership. Defacing his statue disrespects Sikh heritage and harms community harmony,” Brown stated on X (formerly Twitter), calling for accountability.
The defacement has reignited discussions on intolerance and respect for cultural heritage, as Sikh leaders continue to advocate for swift justice.
