Gulab Chand Kataria has been appointed as the new Governor of Punjab, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit. Lakshman Prasad Acharya will take over from Kataria as the Governor of Assam and will also assume the additional responsibility for Manipur. On Saturday night, President Droupadi Murmu appointed six new governors and made changes to the roles of three existing ones.
Mr Kataria, 79, is a BJP veteran from Rajasthan.
Who is Gulab Chand Kataria?
Gulab Chand Kataria was born on October 13, 1944, to Hukmi Chand Kataria and Lahari Bai. He earned a Master’s degree in Geography and studied Law at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur. He is married to Anita Kataria.
A long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kataria is a prominent figure in the Mewar-Wagad region of southern Rajasthan. His political career is marked by a strong alignment with the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), reflecting his deep-rooted commitment to its principles.

With a political career spanning more than forty years, Gulab Chand Kataria has established a notable presence in Indian politics. First elected as an MLA from Udaipur in 1977 on a Janata Party ticket, he transitioned to the BJP in 1980, securing re-election. Kataria has been elected as the MLA from Udaipur eight times and also served as a Member of Parliament for the constituency in the Lok Sabha in 1989.
Mr. Kataria, who served as the 31st Governor of Assam, has also held significant positions including Home Minister of Rajasthan and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly.
