Punjab News: Many young Punjabis who moved to Canada seeking better opportunities are now either returning to Punjab or relocating to other countries. Canada, once considered a land of promise, is proving increasingly challenging for immigrants, particularly for students.
Struggles Faced by Students Due to Unemployment
While unemployment affects locals in Canada as well, immigrants, especially students, are facing severe difficulties. Inflation and job scarcity are exacerbating their plight. In Bathinda alone, it’s estimated that around 100 students have returned home after abandoning their Canadian dreams.
Gursharan Singh, an international student who returned disillusioned from Canada, shared his experience. He had invested Rs 25 lakh in hopes of a prosperous future, only to find that Canada did not meet his expectations.
Limited Employment Opportunities
“The job market is dire. Most available jobs are manual labor, which barely covers living expenses. It was financially unsustainable to keep relying on money from home,” Gursharan explained. He decided to return and continue his studies in Bathinda.
Similarly, Navdeep Puar, another Bathinda student who returned from Canada, expressed frustration. Despite his strong academic background, he discovered that his qualifications held little value in Canada. He ended up working as a laborer before deciding to come back. “Canada turned out to be a land of unfulfilled dreams,” he said. “I plan to build my future here in India instead.”
Rising Trend of Students Returning
Senior journalist Sarabjit Singh Dhaliwal, who recently toured Canada, highlighted the critical situation faced by Indian students there. He reported that about 60 percent of the students he met were considering returning to India. Some were hesitant due to societal pressures, but many wanted to come back.
