Punjab Latest News Today: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday convened a meeting of senior functionaries of the Local Government and Rural Development departments. Likewise, the Chief Minister called upon the Chief Secretary, the State Election Commissioner, and the Advocate General.
The move raised speculations that the AAP government is likely to announce elections to the urban and rural civic bodies – Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads.
It is pertinent to mention that the elections to 13,241 Panchayats are due to be held after these were dissolved and administrators were appointed.
Likewise, elections to 5 Municipal Corporations of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Phagwara, Ludhiana and Patiala are also due.
Notably, the terms of other rural civic bodies are scheduled to come to an end in November.
Two days earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had given a hint that he wanted to push his development programmes and implement them before he sought people’s mandate for the rural and urban civic polls, as well as the four assemblies by polls of Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, Barnala and Gidderbaha.
